Sample Faculty-Led South Africa Itinerary

This is an itinerary designed by Faculty-Led South Africa for Professor Jan D. Brooks from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Brooks' group traveled in South Africa from December 30th, 2009 to January 20th, 2010. The trip below marked her third consecutive year working with the staff at Faculty-Led South Africa to coordinate and manage her faculty-led program in South Africa. Depart Chicago Monday, Dec. 28

Day 1, Wednesday, December 30, 2009
Arrival in Cape Town.
Group passes through customs and immigration.
Transport to housing, settle into rooms.
Introductions, orientation and safety briefing, South African etiquette facilitated by staff member. Walking tour of Observatory.
Lunch at home: South African braai with traditional food.
Transportation to Camps Bay Beach for a relaxing afternoon.
Dinner in Observatory at Café Ganesh followed by evening discussion/reflection session.

Day 2, Thursday, December 31
Transportation to District 6 Museum and Oodakraal Reserve. Tours are led by Linda Fortune, a South African historian.
Quick stop: Cavendish for shopping for essentials.
Light dinner at home.
New Year's Eve celebrations at home.

Day 3, Friday, January 1, 2010
Afternoon trip to Llandudno Beach and Rocks.
Dinner at Marco's African Place followed by discussion/reflection session.

Day 4, Saturday, January 2
Township tour of Khayelitsha followed by lunch and discussion with Mama Thope.
Travel to the city centre to attend the Minstrel Carnival (tour led by Sedick).
Early dinner with Sedick or at home, opportunity to catch up on sleep.

Day 5, Sunday, January 3
Attend church in the Nyanga Township with Ivy Ndwanya.
Stellenbosch wine tour followed by a visit to the Cheetah Rehabilitation Centre at Spier and dinner at Vergenoegd wine estate.

Day 6, Monday, January 4
Tour of the Cape Peninsula including visits to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point.
Visit the African Penguin colony, located at Boulder's Beach in Simon's Town (packed lunches).
Tour Imizamo Yethu Township in Hout Bay with ANC representative Kenny Tokwe.
Dinner at home followed by discussion/reflection session.

Day 7, Tuesday, January 5
First day of work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Dinner at home followed by evening discussion/reflection session.

Day 8, Wednesday, January 6
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Dinner at Beth Uriel Home for Young Men followed by discussion/reflection session at home.

Day 9, Thursday, January 7
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Dinner at home followed by discussion/reflection session.

Day 10, Friday, January 8
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Sunset cruise on the Tigger 2 followed by dinner at Quay 4 in the V&A Waterfront.

Day 11, Saturday, January 9
Free Activity Day. Options include shark cage diving; visit to the Old Biscuit Mill Saturday Market; trip to the beach.
Early dinner at Mzoli's Restaurant in the Gugulethu Township in the late afternoon/evening.

Day 12, Sunday, January 10
Volunteer at the Ubuntu Peace Community Project in Nyanga township, a community garden sponsored by VACorps.
Visit Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 13, Monday January 11
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Dinner at home followed by discussion/reflection session.

Day 14, Tuesday January 12
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Dinner at home followed by discussion/reflection session.

Day 15, Wednesday, January 13
Work at volunteer sites (packed lunches).
Invite local guests for dinner to participate in evening reflection/discussion session.

Day 16, Thursday, January 14
Volunteer sites (packed lunches)
Sunset Sailboat Cruise on Table Bay
Late dinner at waterfront or Obs

Day 17, Friday, January 15
Volunteer sites - goodbyes! (packed lunches)
Fly to Johannesburg, dinner and Overnight at Lebo's backpacker's in Soweto

Day 18, Saturday, January 16
Bicycle tour of Soweto township  (full-day tour).
Dinner at Radium Beer Hall in Joburg.
Overnight at Gandhi's backpacker's in downtown Joburg.

Day 19, Sunday, January 17
Visit the Apartheid Museum.
Visit to Constitution Hill.
Fly back to Cape Town in the evening.

Day 20, Monday, January 18
Breakfast, Lunch, and Safari experience at Fairie Glen Game Reserve.
Early dinner: Braai at Ivy's house in Nyanga.

Day 21, Tuesday, January 19
Morning shopping at Greenmarket Square or Lion's Head hike.
Lunch on Long Street in downtown Cape Town.
Packing and farewell meeting.
Depart for home.

Day 22, Wednesday, January 20
Arrival at O'Hare Airport for pick up by families.
